Although Krombach acknowledged giving Kalinka a chemical, saying it would make her tan more quickly, the mixture of drugs she ultimately had injected into her body turned out to be lethal.
Although the stepfather was found guilty in 1995, the French Ministry of Law declined to issue an international warrant for his arrest and Germany refused to extradite him.
Bamberski believed he would not receive justice for the loss of his daughter as a result.
The father remembered, according to The Independent: “Those court cases really hurt me. I had the impression that I could no longer trust anyone.
After learning for years what Krombach had done to his daughter, Bamberski made the choice to organize for his kidnapping and subsequent transport to France, as detailed in a Netflix documentary. This was because he knew that the authorities would not allow him to be sent across the border.
In 2009, Bamberski proceeded out his idea by visiting Bregenz, Austria, which is close to the German border. There, he placed advertisements seeking help in moving Krombach to France.
One of the residents who came forward was Anton Krasniqi, who then went on to hire two Russian mobsters to help him get Krombach into a car outside his house.
Then they drove him into France over the border as he was gagged and shackled.
After Krombach crossed the border, Bamberski called the police on the phone using an anonymous tip, informing them that he had apprehended a wanted person.
Near the German border in Mulhouse, Krombach was discovered with his hands and feet bound outside the prosecutor’s office.
Although Bamberski acknowledged not researching the legal ramifications of kidnapping Krombach, he said he “would not have gone ahead with it” if he had.
After being abducted for two years, Krombach was ultimately found guilty of committing intentional bodily harm that resulted in an unintentional death and given a 15-year prison sentence.
Although Bamberski avoided going to jail for the kidnapping, he was sentenced to one year of suspended jail time for planning the crime.
“I fully respect that people can be morally against my removal of the doctor from Germany to France, but everyone must respect that – legally – I did nothing wrong,” he said in defense of his conduct in his 2022 interview. The legal system provided evidence of that.”
